I'm thinking about getting a swimming pool and I have not decided whether I should get an above ground pool or an inground pool. I guess cost will be the biggest factor. I mostly want it to cool off during the hot summer months since I live in the northeast.
What size pool should I consider? Any idea of the prices?
Based on what you are looking for, I’d recommend a 52 inch deep above ground pool. A round pool that is 27 feet in diameter or a rectangular pool that measures 15 feet by 30 feet should meet your demand. Above ground pools in this size range are available for $2500-3000 with some basic accessories, if you shop carefully. I’d recommend that you consider and upgrade package for an additional $500 or so to include a better pump and filter, some pool stairs and some cleaning equipment. Installation rates vary by your area, but I’d budget around $1500 for this. All in all, this will end up costing you about $5000 and you may want to add an above ground pool heater, a chlorinator and your zoning board may require that a fence be installed to limit access.
An inround pool could run you anywhere from $15000-20000 for the installed pool and equipment itself, and more for the fencing and the sorrunding paving work that you may want. It is much harder to find discount prices on inground pools, but some builders run specials near the end of the swimming season when work has slowed down for them.
