Swimming Pool heat pumps are operated by electricity to circulate a fluid width thermodynamic properties through an expansion valve. The actual heat is generated during the compression of the refrigerant. These heat pumps use compressors similar to air conditioning units, and they can be either the better scroll compressor or the more common reciprocal compressor. Scroll compressors operate more efficiently and are found in the higher priced systems.
A circulating pump moves the water through the heat pumps heat exchanger where the temperature of the pool water is elevated. It is in this heat exchanger where the refrigerated is compressed and this concentrated heat is transferred to the water. This transfer is more or less and equilibrium process between the water and the refrigerant. After exiting the heat exchanger, the warmed pool water is cycled back to the pool and the chilled refrigerated reenters the compression loop and is reheated.

Heat pumps are suited when the ambient air temperatures exceed 50° since that is when they operate most efficiently. This is usually not a problem for most pool owners because they only open their above ground pools during the warmer months.
The initial cost of a heat pump for swimming pools is higher than the cost of the gas pool heaters. But because they are much more efficient than gas heaters they have a much lower operating costs. Heat pump heaters for above ground pools have been expected lifetime of 10 years, which is twice as long as the anticipated life of a gas fired pool heater.
