Propane pool heaters are used by homeowners that favor gas pool heaters but do not have access to a natural gas supply. These heaters use LP gas as a fuel source and it is stored in a tank near the heating unit.

Propane heaters are used by homeowners to heat their above ground swimming pools since they are cheaper to purchase and install than solar heating systems and heat pumps. Gas heaters can also raise the temperature of the pool water in a shorter period of time. Gas pool heaters also have the ability to heat the water to a higher temperature than the non-gas systems.

The combustion of propane is the heat source, and the unit's heat exchanger transfer this heat energy to the pool's water though the circulation pump. This can be the same pump that is used for the pool filter if it is sufficiently sized.

However, propane pool heaters have a very high operating cost due to the low efficiency of gas pool heating units and the high cost of LP gas. LP generally cost twice as much as natural gas. Despite the fact that they have the lowest heating efficiency, new advances in gas pool heating technology have demonstrated that they can operate at up to a ninety-five percent efficiency rating.

Propane pool heaters can be most efficiently run by operating them for short periods. This is suitable for these heating units becasue they raise the water temperature very quickly. They are best used when the water does not need to be heated all the time for pools that see constant use. This is great for most consumers, because this is how they use their swimming pools.

Propane heaters require LP as their fuel source, and this is usually stored in a nearby tank that is rented from the LP supplier. Also, an electricity source may be needed it the heater uses an electronic ignition system.
